Parmi ceux-ci, Ed Gage, Hugh Bentley et Hugh Britton qui tentent de rallier \u00e0 leur cause, un avocat respect\u00e9 mais prudent, Albert L. Patterson, par ailleurs un vieil ami de Thanner. Patterson refuse de s&rsquo;engager de quelque c\u00f4t\u00e9 que ce soit, puis re\u00e7oit son fils, lui m\u00eame avocat, John, de retour d&rsquo;Allemagne, o\u00f9 il eut affaire aux criminels de guerre nazis. John d\u00e9couvre que la d\u00e9mocratie peut \u00eatre gangren\u00e9e de l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur par la corruption et prend fait et cause pour le comit\u00e9 des citoyens. Il s&rsquo;insurge, mais les rares citoyens honn\u00eates le payeront tr\u00e8s cher.
